Canadian Italians Against Oppression
Zines are "self-published, non-commercial print-work[s] [...] typically produced in small, limited batches" (The Bindery). Inspired by their underground, political, and craftivist history and our favourite zines, we will be publishing biannual issues featuring written and visual work from community members.
C.I.A.O.'s zines will bring together our collective and creative interpretations on a variety of themes, from herbalism and agriculture, to art and design, and history and immigration. Our first issue is about Labour.

C.I.A.O. Zine Issue No. 1
C.I.A.O. invites submissions for our first zine, centering around the theme of labour.
The topic for this zine came from our members asking one another what their relationship to labour was. We looked at labour through the relationships of our immigrant families, our service jobs and minimum wages, and most recently, the labour expected of us during a moment of intense crisis. We wanted to take the word and see all of the circumstances under which it could be broken down: emotional labour, invisible labour, labour struggles, performative labour in late capitalism, and the future of labour. We encourage you to be creative with what you define as labour, what has forged your relationship with it, and how it shapes and structures our world.
We are collecting both non-fiction (reporting, essays, memoir, humour, etc.) and fiction (poetry, prose, short stories) in English, French, and Italian. We are also collecting visual art (illustrations, video in form of screen captures, photography, comics, etc.). We accept work published elsewhere.
We are a non-profit organization, and therefore are unable to provide honorariums at this time. All profits raised from this publication will be donated to the Immigrant Workers Center. Your name and bio will be present with your published piece. All contributors will receive complimentary issues.
The deadline for submissions is June 1st, 2021 at 11:59 PM EST.
All images must be 300dpi in .psd format.
All texts must be maximum 1500 words.
All submissions can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org, with Zine Submission as a subject line.
